KARACHI: In response to rising electricity tariffs, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced plans to install solar-powered street lights on major roads across the city. This initiative will be carried out under the World Bank-funded Competitive & Liveable City of Karachi (CLICK) project, as stated by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab during a meeting at his office on Monday.

The project will begin with the installation of solar-powered street lights on Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-i-Iran, and Marine Drive, with an initial cost of Rs1 billion. These three roads are the focus of the first phase, which will eventually expand to all 106 roads under KMC’s control.

“The project is part of the CLICK programme, and tenders for these three roads have already been issued,” the mayor said. “The selected parties will be responsible for keeping the street lights operational and maintaining them for five years.”

Mayor Wahab emphasized that solar-powered street lights would significantly reduce KMC’s electricity bills and eliminate issues related to load-shedding. He highlighted the importance of a sustainable street lighting system to ensure uninterrupted lighting on the city’s roads.

The mayor also directed officials to ensure the timely and transparent completion of the project’s first phase, aiming to restore Karachi’s infrastructure and enhance urban living standards.
